COURSE OBJECTIVES :
The objectives of the course are :
- to briefly review the physiology of performance in the equine athlete,
- to describe the potential medical causes of poor performance in racehorses and sporthorses,
- to focus on the diagnostic approach in practice in cases of subclinical problems,
- to perform and interpret exercise tests
- to optimize interpretation of laboratory findings.
Clinical cases will be implemented as well as practical demonstrations
At the end of the course, the participants will be able to :
perform and interpret field exercise tests and clinical biology in sport and race horses, evaluate the functional consequences of various subclinical disorders on the horse's response to exercise, diagnose and differentiate between several potential causes of poor performance. The participants will also have discussed over clinical cases and will be able to apply therapy and management advice (over work, competition schedule, controlled use of medication).

Morning 1
Physiology of the athletic horse: what are the key factors determining performance
How to handle a case of poor performance ?
- The essential steps of the clinical exam
- Clinical biology : which parameters should we choose and how do we interpret them?
- Exercise testing in the field
- Veterinary follow-up of the athletic horse during a season: medical and training check-ups
Afternoon1 Which cardiac problems impair performance and how do we diagnose them ?
- Clinical exam, resting and exercising ECG
- Doppler Echocardiography: techniques and indications
- Clinical cases
Muscular disorders : diagnosis and management
- What muscular problems can we encounter and how do they limit the racehorse ?
- What advice can be given regarding training management and nutrition ?
Morning 2 Upper airway disorders
- Upper airways and poor performance
- Diagnosis of dynamic obstructions during exercise
Lower airway diseases
- The consequences of lower airway diseases on performance
- Inflammatory Airway Disease ( IAD) : fact or fiction?
- Exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage (EIPH) : should we treat ? when and how ?
Afternoon 2 Clinical cases-Demonstration of an overground endoscopy

Emmanuelle van Erck graduated from the French Veterinary School of Alfort in 1996. In 2003, she completed a PhD on the topic of equine respiratory function testing at the University of Liège, while continuing work as a clinician at the Equine Sports Medicine Centre. She is now consulting clinician in equine sports medicine both at the Faculty of Liège in Belgium as well as at the CIRALE in Normandy, France. She is a diplomate of the European College of Equine Internal Medicine (ECEIM)
